गहरा कोहरा है
नुक्कड़ वाले मोड़ पर आज भी बैठी है वो बुढ़िया,
खाली आँखों से आसमान टटोलती
हाथों में उसके लकीरे न होंगी शायद
चेहरे पर ही वक़्त ने जैसे नक़्क़ाशी जड़ दी हो
उस चाबी वाले गुड्डे मे चाबी भर मुस्कुराती
दिवाली पर दिलवाया था उसे, बड़ा खुश हुआ था
मेरी अच्छी माँ कहकर खूब ज़ोर से गले लगाया था
वक़्त चाबी भरना भूल गया शायद
वो चलते चलते रुक गया
न कदम उठा न हाथ बढ़ा – अँधेरा हुआ था तब
आज कोहरा है, गहरा कोहरा है

When the vast sky says hello to the enormous ocean
It’s just the breeze I hear among the roars
A half-dressed sun hides beneath the clouds
I try to dress it with a half-naked orange moon
This evening seems to have lost its sheen
And the night seduces the stars into illusion
The sun-baked hopes seem to wither
I wash their face with a new song
I look up, and then down as the silence caresses me
I hear a good-bye, my shadow moves away
It’s just me and the night, as we sleep hand in hand
a cushion of the half-naked orange moon, and a blanket of dreams
चिंगारियों की भीड़ मैं इक शोला उठा
किसी अधूरे गीत सी अंगड़ाई ली
और बेखुदी की ताल में बोला
चलो हवाओं के रुख बदलते हैं
आग बनने की आग दिल में
अपने पीले लहू में रंग भरने चला
चिंगारियां बोली, शोला है तो भड़केगा
थोड़ा जलेगा, और बुझ जायेगा
शोला कुछ कहते-कहते रुक गया
वापिस मुड़ा और जलने लगा
व्यूह रच कर अपने मन में
अग्नि मंथन को चला
चिंगारियों को छेड़कर
वो शोलों को भेदता
अपने आप से लड़ता वो कभी
कभी दर्द को नकारता
चोट खाया अधमरा सा
धुंधली सी मंज़िल के आईने को पोंछकर
अपनी आग को ज़िंदा रखता रहा
उस आग की चाह में
कहीं लौ उठी उम्मीद की
इक लपट बनी, प्रचंड हुई
वो चिंगारियां अब राख थी
ये शोला अब इक आग था
